Profile

Dr. Maaike GH Dautzenberg has a background in medical sociology, medical anthropology and social gerontology. She finished a Masters (M.A.) in Sociology and Medical Anthropology in 1987.

In 2000 she obtained a PhD degree at University Maastricht. The title of her PhD-thesis was "Daughters caring for elderly parents".

After several years of research experience in developing countries such as India, Pakistan and Tanzania, she returned tot the Netherlands and worked for over 10 years in the academic field of elder care.

From 2004 onwards her focus shifted from academic research  to practice based policy research in health care en community care.

Since 2011 Maaike Dautzenberg works successfully as an independent consultant and researcher. She owns the company named Dautzenberg Research & Advice.

Long term care for the elderly

Her work focuses is on the organisation of long term care for home-dwelling frail elderly: home care, the burden of care of family caregivers and collaboration between formal and informal caregivers.

Practice based implementation research

Maaike Dautzenberg has finished in the past 20 years a large number of project evaluations and practice based research projects. Her strength is implementation research: process and effect evaluations of care innovations.

Patient’s perspective

She expresses in particular the patient’s perspective on the quality of care. Patients include home-dwelling frail elderly, disabled persons and persons with psychiatric problems.

According to her view, self-reliance and self-mastery of individual patients is important, but  more effective when combined with a system-perspective: strenghtening support networks of both formal (professional) caregivers and the informal helpers surrounding the patient.

Collaboration with the academic field

In her work she works closely together with universities and research institutes such as Free University Amsterdam, Radboud Medical Centre Nijmegen and IQ healthcare (Radboud University).
